Description of Courses

Ceramics I

Grades: 9-12 Grouping: Heterogeneous

Prerequisite: None

In the Ceramics I course students will learn basic techniques of hand-building such as pinch, coil, and slab, followed by an introduction to wheel throwing. Assignments emphasize inventive design and technical skill in constructing both functional and non-functional forms. Various surface texture and glaze application methods will be explored.

Semester course, 5 times per week, 2.5 credits

Ceramics II

Grades: 9-12 Grouping: Heterogeneous

Prerequisite: Ceramics I with a B- or higher

Ceramics II builds on skills and concepts developed in Ceramics I, with a major emphasis placed on wheel throwing techniques. New constructions may include handled forms, drape molding, altering forms, assemblage, and tile making. Sculpture and vessel making will focus on form, surface design, and good craftsmanship. Exposure to historical and contemporary ceramics will be included.
